Merge and Manage Combined Technical Writing and Training Departments

LOCATION: AGS Inc.

SITUATION:

With a Training Department located in New York city and a Documentation / Technical Writing Department located in New Jersey, AGS saw the opportunity to consolidate and optimize resources with all services located in NY.   In addition, an active documentation project had the risk of missing its fixed-price period of performance deadline.

NEEDS DEFINITION:

For a major telecommunication firm client, two commercial product manuals were in final-review mode with significant content issues and only four weeks remaining to complete the fixed-price deliverable.

Simultaneously, criteria needed to be established for a newly merged, cross-skill department that would require:

  • Technical writing skills based on document types

  • Document review and editing skills

  • Stand-up training delivery skills based on active and prospective opportunities

SOLUTION DEVELOPMENT:

Critical Documentation Delivery: One major rewrite with two review cycles was scheduled and executed within the compressed period of performance. The client was satisfied with the final deliverables, and the product was successfully released to market on time.
Service Expansion: A staff of technical writers was retained to meet with AGS subject matter experts to develop and productize AGS-branded training materials in topics such as Business Process Reengineering and Software Functional Analysis.
Sustained Client Services:

  • Classes were offered to clients on a quarterly basis based on market need

  • Documentation and training-material development services continued to be available to clients across the country

  • Just-in-time printing and binding materials were implemented to reduce costs of producing in-classroom branded training materials
